President-Elect Joe Biden just selected California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
As a former health insurance executive turned industry whistleblower, I believe Xavier Becerra is a strong choice to lead Health and Human Services. Xavier Becerra has been a leader in protecting healthcare, fighting against the status quo, and pushing to cover every American.
Becerra’s confirmation will be a major fight. Several Republican Senators have already attacked Becerra, labeled him as a “radical” for supporting comprehensive healthcare reform, and voiced that they will not vote to confirm Becerra to lead the HHS.
Opponents of healthcare reform will line up to reject Becerra’s confirmation because he would threaten the bottom line of their wealthiest corporate donors. With Becerra at the head of the HHS, private health insurers would lose their influence over our elected officials and Americans would be closer to getting the healthcare they deserve.
Private insurers and their allies won’t stop their attacks against Becerra until his confirmation is denied. We need to act now to send a clear message that Becerra is the leader Americans need to stand up to private insurers and fight to achieve healthcare for everyone.
